Recently I went through a family week at a recovery center. As I was leaving for the first day I was very nervous and and dreading the whole idea. Reaching the door, I paused and actually turned around and went back to my room to change into the brave shirt. Wearing that intention that day honestly helped me to get through the initial anxiousness for the day. Many participants commented “boy I sure could have used that shirt today”. It truly helped.
I have a brave cling stuck to my bathroom tile right behind where my toothpaste and toothbrush live. I see it several times a day.
I didn’t think I needed “brave.” I have buried both my parents, survived a divorce, and gotten my master ’s degree at 43. That took courage, so I figured I had enough bravery and didn’t need that word.
Then I realized one of my biggest challenges is being okay living authentically. Living authentically is really important to me, but also really difficult sometimes.
So I put up the brave cling and every time I look at it, I think: “be who you are, trust want you know, be brave enough to do what is right for you.”
