Faith or Hope?
Empoword wants…no needs…your feedback.
This week we launched two new words on the website: ageless and smart. Later this year, we will be adding three new words to our collection of affirmations. We want to make sure we are adding words that are meaningful and empowering, to YOU!
Please vote to the right. Faith or hope? Take a minute to comment below. Tell us why you prefer one word over the other.
Your words matter! We look forward to reading your comments.

Hope and Faith are often looked at as synonymous words - but after my experience with cancer and reading several books on mindfulness, I have come to the conclusion that Faith is internal - something you own and bring to the world, integral to the person that you are. (i.e. To be faithful “in”, to have Faith “in”….) Whereas Hope, in my opinion, is something external - dependent on someone or something outside of oneself. (i.e. To be hopeful “that”…, To have Hope “for”… ) Just my opinion, but hopefully food for thought!
Christine, owner of Global Warmings up in Virginia Minnesota tweeted us and said:
“I think Faith is a much more powerful word than Hope, its timeless!”
Great feedback! Please keep it coming.
Hope is a word many can get their head around. Faith my imply religion (even though I know it is not dependent on religion).
I agree with Ruth regarding internal vs external.
As an external thing, Hope is something you give to others, based on your inner faith in all things good.
Faith has much more power for me, but I voted for Hope.
Either would be good, but Hope is a more “generic” term that I think would be more accepted. As stated before, Faith triggers a thought of religion, although I have faith in our new President, I hope the rest of the world will too.
To me faith is a belief in something that is, something you believe in and something that you believe will come to pass. Hope is something you wish for that doesn’t yet exist, may or may not come to pass, is further away than you’d perhaps like, and yet you want it to come to you. You aren’t assured that it will come to pass at all. Faith is a strong conviction that it is already there. Hope requires you to consciously create it. Hope is more of your own creation and perhaps a bit more work. I vote for hope.
Go with faith for insights already posted. In my book Action Based Communication: Changing Experience through Language (reference on this site) there is a section on hope, which I and those who tested the methodolgy consider a weak word. Investing in a positive outcome requires faith–going deep inside and trust–borne from one’s experience. Hope places positive outcome outside your control as an individual. Yes, while hope is referenced in literature as powerful, I firmly follow faith to support my well being. I encourage and support clients in doing the same. Test the difference in your body–pay attention to what happens in your physical structure when you assert faith and make a note of the sensations; shake that off and do the same when you assert hope.
I think that with the state of our economic situation and people losing their jobs etc., that we all need to be hopeful. Hopeful in our government and hopeful that things will eventually get better, not just for America, but the whole world.
I like to practice both hope and faith - but to get really nit-picky, Hope to me means that you’re looking for something that you don’t believe to already be there, whereas Faith signifies something you already believe to be true. I’m told it’s better to focus on the things you have and the things you know are coming to you, instead of worrying that things aren’t ever going to exist for you.
So - I can Hope that one day my financial burdens will lighten… or I can have Faith that they already are.
One can Hope that a long-distance relationship will come to fruition one day… or they can have Faith that the love and commitment is already there.
I can Hope that I’m where I need to be in life… or I can have Faith that I’m exactly where I’m meant to be.
(:
Thank you to everyone who voted and to all of you who took the time to comment. Great responses. You have educated and inspired us.
We are carefully considering your thoughtful feedback and beginning design work on new words to be released this year.
Stay tuned and stay empowered!
In a strategic sales class I attended for my business, the instructor called hope an island. It’s always stuck that way for me. Hope is really no action on your part. Faith is work.
