Got a Second: Breathe

What would happen if you started doing just one of the following:

- Took a deep breathe after turning off your alarm clock.

- Took two deep breathes in the shower.

- Took a breathe every time you turned on your cell phone.

- Remembered to breathe when you are stuck in traffic.

- Took a cleansing breathe, when you sign-in to your email.

- Just breathed as you waited in line.

Other suggestions? Please share a quick breathing tip.

Breathing can…

A few good breathes can disable your bodies stress response system and kick your relaxation response into gear. Breathing can:

• decrease heart rate and lower blood pressure
• decrease respiration and oxygen consumption
• increase blood supply to non-essential organs and systems including the digestive and immune systems
• decrease muscle tension
• increase slow brain, alpha waves associated with relaxation

Before you click away from this post - pause - take a two deep breathes. Feel better?

See how simple that was.

Empowered Breathing, Updated

How often do you think about your breathing?

I know it doesn’t rank high on my list of things to think about. Good thing too. If I had to think about breathing some days it might not happen. Fortunately, breathing is an involuntarily bodily function. Without a thought, breathing happens.

Now add a little thought to the mix and breathing becomes a powerful wellness tool.

Breathing is one of a few automatic bodily functions that you actually can influence. You can take short, fast breathes or deep, slow breathes. You can use your breath to create positive physiological changes in a matter of seconds. Breathing can be used to help reduce anxiety, improve sleep, lower blood pressure, increase attention and focus, and even manage pain. No wonder integrative medicine pioneer and expert Joan Borysenko says: “Breathing is the single most important skill for calming mind and body.”

Most of us spend the day taking short, shallow, imperceptible breaths high up in our chests. This kind of breathing makes our shoulder’s move. Certainly it meets our body’s functional needs, but does little to de-stress mind, body and spirit. For that we need conscious, deep breathing. The kind that expands our belly’s and rib cage’s. Babies take those deep belly breaths. As we grow older we are taught to “suck in our gut” to look thin and svelte. We stop taking those full, healthy breaths.

It may sound silly, but most of us need to re-learn how to breathe deeply. Learning to use your breath to regulate mind, body and spirit can be empowering. It gives you a measure of control when you often feel most out of control – when you are stuck in traffic, frustrated with the kids, tossing and turning in the middle of the night, under too much stress at work, or even in when you are trying to manage chronic pain.

Something to think about, huh?

Get Breathing

One of my favorite breathing exercises is one of the simplest. Exhale. Keep exhaling and exhaling and exhaling until you can’t exhale any more. Push all the air in your lungs out. Keep pushing until you gasp for air. Automatically you will take a deep, full oxygenating breathe. I think it feels great.

Here are a two websites with additional breathing exercises and techniques to try:

Three Breathing Exercises from Dr. Andrew Weil

So Hum Meditation from Deepak Chopra

Chill Out

Out of the Mouths of Babes

>by Paige Bosler, Guest Blogger and 11 year-old daughter of Empoword co-founder, Wendy Lutter

I just started running club with my school. I like running club because I get to be with my friends and it makes me feel strong to run. In the beginning I was having trouble even doing one lap around the lake. I’ve been taking my breathe water bottle with me. Every time I look at it and take a drink of water out of it, I remember to breathe and now I am able to pretty much do one lap without stopping. Instead of holding my breath or taking little breaths, the bottle is a reminder and when I remember to breathe it helps me run better. My goal is to run around the lake twice without stopping by end of May.

Exciting News!

Wendy and I are thrilled to share some exciting news. This morning we officially signed on with literary agent Bill Hammond.

After over two years of hearing we needed to write a book about Empoword’s see it, think it, be it philosophy, we decided to listen.

We are halfway through with our manuscript. The working title for the project is See It, Feel It, Be It: How Using Visual Mantras Can Change Your Life. The book includes stories of how real people have used visual mantras - including some of Empoword’s products - to change their lives. We also explain in concrete, practical terms why visual mantras work so well at helping you manifest goals and dreams.

Stay tuned, as we take our own advise. Next update we’ll tell you who is publishing the book. Ya gotta, see it, feel it, be it!

Imagine - Word of the Month

Remember in Field of Dreams when Kevin Costner’s character hears that voice: “If you build it, he will come.”? As we all know, Costner, or rather his character Ray, builds the baseball field and out come the ballplayers, and with them plenty of magical moments and dreams come to life.

“If you build it, they will come” has become one of those modern day mantras about taking risks, believing in yourself and realizing dreams. It is a great mantra. Very empowered!

But before you “build it”, you have to decide what it is you want to build. That takes imagination. Dreaming. Thinking outside the box. Seeing possibilities.

Imagine
is the Empoword Word of the Month. Imagine the possibilities. Dream big. Decide what you want. Then set your intentions and soar.

Empowering People: Meet Ann Bancroft

Ann Bancroft epitomizes what can happen when we imagine. Ann dared to dream about doing something no other woman had ever done before. Of becoming a polar explorer - of uncovering the magic of undiscovered places. And she made her dream come true.

Ann Bancroft’s list of accomplishments is impressive. She was the first woman to travel to the North Pole. She was the only woman on that 1986 expedition led by Will Steger, traveling 1000 miles by dog sled from the Northwest Territories to the North Pole. In 1993, she lead the American Women’s Expedition to the South Pole, a 67-day trek of 660 miles on skis. Just to name a couple of her remarkable adventures and achievements.

“I didn’t go for any other reason but to fulfill my dreams,” she says of a 1986 trip to the North Pole that propelled her into the national spotlight. “I think we do best when we follow our passions.”

Ann’s love of the outdoors began early, during camping and canoeing trips with her parents. At age eight, she led her own expeditions, cajoling cousins into backyard winter camping trips. She camped under the stars and imaged all the places she would go.

“My first adventures were simple ones. We lived in a rural setting, so I’d just escape out the back door. There was plenty of space around, so every day was a great adventure. In fact, those early explorations were the bedrock for fortifying my dreams. They allowed me to playact, and more practically to learn outdoor skills, such as sleeping outside in the winter.”

Ann’s life was changed at age 12 when she read of Sir Ernest Shackleton’s story of survival in Antarctica. From then on, Ann dreamed of the Poles. About the same time, Ann was diagnosed with dyslexia. Somehow this fueled her desire to learn, but to learn experientially.

Since then, Ann has helped others learn, combining her roles as teacher and polar explorer. Her commitment to teaching through experience is what led her to help girls turn their dreams into reality. She started the Ann Bancroft Foundation, whose mission is to support girls and women to realize their highest dreams and potential. For over 10 years, the Foundation has been honoring and encouraging the achievements of girls and women.

Ann’s down-to-earth, friendly and compassionate personality make it easy to get excited and share in her dream. She makes it seem possible, almost easy, to set an intention and make it happen. “I love being a catalyst for breaking down barriers and myths,” she says.

In 2011, Ann will embark on her most ambitious project yet. She and fellow explorer Liv Arnesen will host six women from six continents on the seventh - Antarctica. As a team of eight with a mission to engage 50 million school children from around the globe, they hope to begin a conversation backed by four curricula that will culminate to actionable steps at the South Pole.

Ann Bancroft truly is an empowering person, empowering others.
